The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Orchestra was founded in 2011 by a group of young people who share a love of music, amongst them are secondary school students, university students, and those just entering the world of work. Despite being occupied with studies and works, in the midst of the most ordinary of days they have come together through their passion for orchestral music. Looking back, the orchestra has grown from an unremarkable group into one that has appeared on the grandest of stages, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Zhuhai Grand Theatre, MGM Theatre in Macau, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Hong Kong Coliseum. They also performed outdoors at landmarks such as the International IFC, Hong Kong International Airport, M+ Museum, Kai Tak Cruise Terminal and West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station. With unyielding persistence, the orchestra has been awarded the Gold Prizes at the International Youth Music Festival Limburg Belgium, the International Music Festival Holland, the Carat-Concerten Helmond, the Outstanding Youth Symphony Orchestra Award at the Hong Kong Most Innovative Enterprise Award, and the Championship at the China International Youth Music Festival.
Perhaps these footprints and honours show even the most ordinary of beginnings can give rise to extraordinary music. The power of music does not lie in background or prestige, but in devotion and persistence. On 3 January 2026 at 7:15 pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, we will present Treasures of Time: Charity Concert 2026. We invite you to witness the orchestra’s 15th anniversary and this journey from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The concert will include many well-loved classics: together with pianist William Zhang we will perform the mighty Yellow River Piano Concerto, along with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March, Smetana’s nostalgic Má Vlast: The Moldau, Johann Strauss II’s sparkling Die Fledermaus Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and ‘Pas de Deux’ from The Nutcracker, and three choral works — ‘Eternal Love’, ‘The Sacred War’ and ‘Katyusha’ — with the Hong Kong Symphonic Choir. We’ll be seeing you there!
